AN important event where people can pledge their support for the Armed Forces, especially those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, is all set to take place in Okehampton.
West Devon residents are being given the chance to show their appreciation for the work carried out by the Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force on Saturday, October 4.
From 10am until 12.30pm the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) will be hosting a Big Brew Up in Okehampton's Charter Hall.
Organisers of the event hope it will help promote awareness and raise funds for serving and ex-service personnel as well as their families.
One of the organisers, Roger Lawes, said: 'People need to be aware of what this charity does.
'There are a lot of people out there who could do with help but they don't realise there are charities out there to help them.
'We're hoping to raise a good bit of money for SSAFA.
'The care and support of SSAFA Forces Help is as significant now as it was when the charity was established in 1885.
'Indeed, the high tempo of current military operations, such as Iraq and Afghanistan, means that it is perhaps more important than ever that the Association is here whenever and wherever help is needed.'
SSAFA Forces Help is the leading national charity caring for those who serve in our Armed Forces, those who used to serve and the families of both.
Since its creation in 1885, the support and assistance provided by SSAFA has constantly been adapted to meet the changing needs of serving and ex-servicemen and women, and the families of both.
The Big Brew Up is an annual event taking place as far afield as Iraq, Afghanistan and Germany as well as in the UK.
Mr Lawes added: 'Join us on October 4 — enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and learn what SSAFA does to help those in need.'
