Gareth Williams, also a sixth form student at the college, said: 'Not only are there very good implications for the environment but also financially, in savings made on electricity and for industry.

'Renewable energy will be a huge business sector in years to come. For Okehampton, a town which has suffered so much recently, we need to look forward and see how we can invest in such businesses for the future.'

The appeal to West Devon Borough Council is expected to take place in the near future.
