SUCCESSFUL students have been honoured at a ceremony at Duchy College on its Stoke Climsland campus.

Bringing together all departments, the annual promise awards recognise the achievements, endeavours and progress of students, who have been nominated by their course tutors.

This year saw a record number of students nominated by staff and tutors which meant for the first time there were multiple winners in each category — as well as two extra awards for volunteering and contribution to sport.

Early years student Chloe Wardell from Gunnislake received an award for achievement.  She moved to the area last year, having completed some of the course previously at Essex College, and is well on target to achieve the result she needs to study her chosen subjects of midwifery or adult nursing at university next year.

She said: 'I am amazed that I won, I wasn't expecting it! I have definitely put in a lot of hard work and kept going at it, so it's great to win this award.'

Students Jessica Dingle and Nichola Issac received a special award for their contribution to sport.

As well as excelling themselves in sport participation, from running coaching sessions to organising teams, they have also been representing the region at a national level.

Jessica, who lives in Tavistock and is in the second year of the sport BTEC extended diploma, said: 'This has been a very good year for me and I am so excited to have won this award.'

Duchy College senior tutor Mike Carnall, who organised and led the award ceremony, said: 'This year the standard was so high that we had to give more than one award per category.

'It's great to recognise so many students across such a diverse range of programmes at different levels.

'I'd like to thank all the staff and tutors who nominated students for the awards, it's just a further illustration of the commitment by staff to recognise and acknowledge the progress and achievements of our students.'
