WHEN it comes collecting old telephone directories to recycle for charity, pupils from West Devon schools did more than just let their fingers do the walking. Their efforts were rewarded when the results of their endeavours were recognised in a special award ceremony at St Peter?s Primary School in Tavistock. Eighteen schools across West Devon took on the Yellow Woods Challenge ? the simple, educational and fun environmental campaign for schools run by Yellow Pages, working with the Woodland Trust, the UK?s woodland conservation charity, and West Devon Borough Council. Pupils from the top recycling schools have been invited to join campaign mascot Kirk and Chris Jenkins, chair of the environment and community committee at the borough council at the official results ceremony. St Peter?s School is the gold oak winner, receiving £300 from Yellow Pages for recycling a superb 10.67 old Yellow Pages directories per pupil. Princetown Primary wins £200 and the silver birch title for recycling 4.51 directories per pupil and Gulworthy Primary wins £100 and the bronze beech honours for recycling 4.09 directories per pupil. Yellow Pages will also award St Peter?s a bonus £100 prize for creating the best giant sculpture from old directories in this year?s local challenge. For every pound Yellow Pages awards to schools, a matching pound is given to the Woodland Trust, to support its ?Tree For All? campaign.
