TAVISTOCK Squash second team have been on a recent losing streak, due to the loss of experienced first and second string players, Phil Honey and John Jameson through injuries. The match against Kier offered an opportunity to re-establish winning ways. First up for Tavistock was Richard Baxter against Jamie Bee. Despite his lack of fitness Richard?s old skills began to return and he won his match 3-0. Stuart Weatherby, Tavistock Squash Club?s handicap champion for 2005, is fast becoming a useful team player. He started quickly and did not give his opponent Ben Murphy any time to find his rhythm. Stuart hit the ball hard on service returns, put Ben under pressure and romped home 3-0. Playing in third position, Pete Walshe came up against Andy Brooksbank, who had given him a hard game when they met in the away fixture. Peter won the first game easily 9-1, but had to work hard to win the second 9-4. Andy started to get his act together in the third with Pete making unforced errors. Andy won 9-6. Pete used a range of tight drop shots and boasts to keep Andy at the back of the court and built up an early 6-2 lead in the fourth game. Andy launched a counter offensive, but Pete was not to be denied the fourth game 9-4. Pete won his match 3-1 and Tavistock looked on course for a clean sweep. Mike Gray, captain of the second team, has had an excellent season, but against Taimor Huq he realised he needed to make his presence felt immediately. Taimor had some useful shots, but Mike?s excellent cross-court shots and clever drops at the front backhand side of the court kept the pressure on and he won 3-0. Last up in the number one position, Dave Ruffell met Andy Allchurch. Rallies were long and exhausting and both Dave and Andy worked hard for their points. Games went to two all and the match was finely poised. Dave looked to have the advantage over Andy with a succession of excellent tight shots but Andy clung on to clinch the fifth game and the match 3-2. So Tavistock won an excellent 4-1 match against Kier and with the additional four points for winning four matches came away with 18 points against Kier?s four. This lifted Tavistock from the middle of the league table and set the team on winning ways again.
