A LIST of places to see before you die may include the Taj?Mahal or the Great Wall of China — and don't forget Mary Tavy, of course!
The Dartmoor village has just been announced as one of the must-see places in the UK in a brand new 'bucket list' — things to do before you die — unveiled by the Premier Inn.
The budget hotel chain has revealed that one in six Brits are unsure of where to go when it comes to looking for somewhere to visit in the UK.
Therefore it has released an unconventional 'bucket list', featuring a whole host of weird, wonderful and surprising places to give Brits inspiration when holidaying at home.
The new list of essential places to see does not include any familiar tourist sites, so the likes of Land's End, the White Cliffs of Dover and Blackpool Tower do not make an appearance.
Instead, Mary Tavy has been listed, alongside Cape Cornwall, Tresco on the Isles of Scilly and Glastonbury Tor in the 50 top locations.
Some residents of Mary Tavy were surprised by the news, but it appears there is much more to this village than meets the eye.
Assistant curate of Mary Tavy John Higman said it was an ancient village with a lot of mining history which grew in importance in the 19th Century because of the mines on the River Tavy.
'It is a very picturesque village and the 13th Century village church, which has features dating back to Norman times, is open during the day,' he said.
'Mary Tavy epitomises glorious Devon and is certainly one of the places to visit before you pop off.'
Parish and borough councillor for the village Terry Pearce said he was amazed that people thought Mary Tavy was simply a main road as you travel from Tavistock to Okehampton.
'The sad thing is that the main road through Mary Tavy looks pretty horrific with two run down sites either side at the moment, but we hope that will all change in the future. Part of the village is a conservation area and we have two good pubs. Not many villages have one, let alone two.
'A lot of walks start from here because we are so close to the moor and there is a lot history attached to Mary Tavy. We had the biggest copper mine in the area (Wheal Betsy) prior to the Devon Great Consols opening.'
There is also a shop and post office, the Coronation Hall which hosts many village activities and a twinning association.
Postmistress Sally Edwards moved with her family to Mary Tavy from Reading seven years ago.
'It's a world away from what we knew and I love it here,' she said.
'If all we have to worry about is the weather, when you see what is going on in London and other cities this week we are very lucky.
'You can go out for a walk on a Sunday and not see anyone.
'It is relatively unspoilt and we like that, but there is loads going on, including a country fair this weekend.'
Travel expert James Ellis, who helped compile the alternative 'bucket list', which is being supported by model and TV presenter Lisa Snowdon, said: 'The UK and Ireland have so many inspirational places to visit.
'We have history that dates back thousands of years, magnificently picturesque landscapes and wondrous feats of industrial engineering.
'They all combine to make a rich tapestry of places to see in the British Isles that means you don't have to stick to the tried and tested sites all the time in order to be amazed.'
