DANGEROUS traffic conditions through a Dartmoor village will go under the spotlight at a public meeting in West Devon this month.

Residents in Mary Tavy say that despite a 30mph speed limit, traffic is still travelling far too fast along the main A386 which cuts straight through the village.

Combined with a lack of pavements, there are concerns that a serious accident could occur.

Now the parish council is to hold a public meeting in the Coronation Hall, with the aim of coming up with some pro-active suggestions to tackle the problem.

Anita Prosser, chairman of the council, said: 'It is a particularly contentious issue in the village.

'We are hoping people will come along with ideas and suggestions and say how they think things could be improved, for drivers and pedestrians.

'Really and truly, we need people there to give their views.'

Cllr Prosser said everyone in the village had been sent a leaflet telling them about the meeting, and already people had written or telephoned with ideas.

'We do have an awful lot of trouble with motorcyclists shooting through and motorists overtaking and although we have the 30mph limit, it just isn't working,' said Cllr Prosser.

'It's not so much the lorries speeding, it's people overtaking them that's the problem.'

Cllr Prosser said the aim of the meeting was to look at the entire traffic issue through Mary Tavy, including enhanced facilities for pedestrians.

'It would be nice to be able to walk safely — and for parents to be able to walk with their children to school,' she said.

The meeting will be at 7.30pm on October 15. Also attending will be Paul Marshall, principal highways engineer with Devon County Council, and MPC Nigel Bishop and borough councillor Pam Scannell.

Everyone living in Mary Tavy is encouraged to attend and hear what could be proposed to improve safety on the road through the village.
