ACTION to address speeding in Liskeard Road, Callington has been successful — around 95% of people are abiding by the speed limit, police said this week.
A survey was undertaken at the request of Cllr Andrew Long following a number of concerns over the speed of vehicles using the road, which is within a 30mph zone.
'I asked our engineering design group to do some research as to the speed of vehicles using Liskeard Road, particularly following the extension of some yellow lines to ease congestion near the town centre,' said Cllr Long.
'The results show that the average speed heading out of town was 30.7 mph whilst the speed in the opposite direction was 32.6 mph. I understand both of these are within the tolerances for such roads.'
He said, however, it was apparent that during two particular parts of the day there was a large number of vehicles breaking the limit quite significantly, with more than 5% of vehicles going over 40mph on three of the five days of recording.
'This is a situation that will be looked at by the police on an on-going basis, but generally it is good news for the residents of Liskeard Road,' added Mr Long.
'But I can assure them that we will keep a close eye on the situation and I am sure that the police will deal with any concerns as they arise.'
Callington Sgt Brett Phillips said with around 95% of people abiding by the speed limit, the data was encouraging.
'The local policing team has tackled this issue, primarily through Neighbourhood Speedwatch, an initiative aimed at educating motorists of the dangers of speed.
'Any persistent offenders are targeted and risk prosecution. This has helped reduce incidents of speeding in the area which is supported by the data.'
