A DOUBLE celebration was held at Abbey Surgery last Thursday to mark the 150th anniversary of the building and ten years of the practice at that site. The surgery is located in the old Tavistock School in Plymouth Road which was opened in July 1956 by the then Prime Minister Lord John Russell, brother to Francis, Duke of Bedford. Seventy people attended the celebrations, including Tavistock?s new mayor Caroline Keane and past teachers, including Colin Blackwell, who gave a delightful description of a diminutive ghost who was said to haunt the building. Local historians Helen Harris and Gerry Woodcock talked about the history of the school building and other guests included past pupils, past and present doctors and staff of the surgery, patients and committee members of the Friends of Abbey Surgery. Former practice manager of 30 years Heather Olver was the winner of the lucky ticket number 30 (Crebers vouchers.) Drinks and a buffet supper were provided by Dukes of Tavistock.
