I FEEL I must express more than a little disappointment with Tavistock Town Council's discussion of a memorial for Gill Gorbutt, as reported in last week's Times.

I was fortunate enough to have been involved in a few of the community projects that Gill helped to initiate. She was a woman of enormous stature, her impact on the well-being of the community was far reaching.

Gill never shied away from giving her support to individuals at times of need.  She was involved in a vast range of local community projects such as the farmers' market. And she showed great concern for the global community which she expressed through charities such as Tamwed, which gives long term help to communities affected by the tsunami.

Her community spirited approach lives on and will continue to touch people's lives through our generation and future ones. To me this suggests a memorial with the stature and longevity of an oak tree with its far reaching canopy and acorns that ensure long-term sustainability, and not a flowering cherry that is short-lived, and flowers for just a few days but gives little comfort for the rest of the year.
