DR Jean Shields returns to the Okehampton and District Local History Society this month to give a talk on Wednesday, March 20 about prisoners of war in Devon.
Dr Shields is a former chairperson of the history group. From 7.30pm in the Ockment Centre, she will give her talk on 'Napoleonic Prisoners of War in Devon'. During the Napoleonic War between France and England, army and naval prisoners were put into old redundant ships when prisons became full. When these ships became over-crowded too, Dartmoor Prison was built at Princetown.
The talk is a change to the previously advertised talk on Meldon reservoir, which will take place at a later date.
History society meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Ockment Centre. New members are always welcome. Anyone interested can call Jane Lehni on 01837 840087.
Non members may attend meetings at a charge of £2 per person.
