Councillors are set to call for a no-stopping area on a national park road after it was paralysed by snow tourists over the New Year period.

Police admit they were appalled by a queue of badly-parked cars on both sides of the Yelverton to Princetown road which prevented a doctor carrying vital Covid-19 vaccinations to a care home.

They promptly shut the B3212 between Yelverton and Princetown road to motorists on New year’s Eve so the doctor could get through.

Now Dartmoor Forest Parish Council is set to call for the strip of road to designated either as an expressway or clearway to prevent drivers stopping anywhere other than moorland car parks.

Tavistock police response sergeant Sgt Si Wellfair said officers had paid the area a follow-up visit the next day to warn drivers about the dangers of badly-parking their cars.

He said a queue of badly-parked vehicles stretched for at least two-and-half miles and added: ‘We’re not saying don’t enjoy the moors — but it’s just that everybody is congregating in the same strip of road and that’s causing problems.

‘Please avoid this area and think of the impact when emergency services cannot get through, thank you.’
