SIX younger members of Tavistock Swimming Club took part in the Junior Sprint Gala in Plymouth, consisting of a 50m race for each of the four strokes. In the ten year age group, Harry Thompson swam to an 11th place in breaststroke and Katie Stephens gained a similar placing in the backstroke race. Kieran Rookes (aged 11) had a good competition, coming in the fifth in the breaststroke, eighth in the backstroke and ninth in the freestyle. Kieran also took 13th place in the BAGCAT competition. Kris Chapman (aged 11) gained a ninth place in the breaststroke event. Also taking part were Harriet Edwards, 11, and Matt Edwards, 13. Several personal best times were achieved. The Devon County ASA Championships were held at Central Park, Plymouth and Tiverton. For a small club such as Tavistock this is a tough competition and it was an achievement to take part. Kieran Rookes, swimming for the first time in this competition, gained seventh place in the boys' 11 years 200m backstroke. Tom Waddington, 15, finished third in his age group for 100m breaststroke, fourth in the 100m individual medley and 50m butterfly, fifth in the 50m breaststroke and tenth in the 50m freestyle. Josh Stephens, 15, was tenth in the 50m butterfly. In the 16 and over category, Laura Radgick took part in the 50m freestyle race and Ross Williams in the 100m butterfly race.
