THE Rotary Club of Tavistock is hoping to make Widecombe Fair day a day to remember, as it organises a major singing event to raise money for Children in Need.

The famous fair, on Tuesday September 9, is known throughout the world thanks to the folk song 'Uncle Tom Cobley and All'. This year, it is hoped people throughout the county will pay a pound and raise their voices in the traditional song to raise money for the BBC's annual charity appeal — and Tavistock residents will be able to do their bit too.

The Rotary Club has contacted clubs, pubs, and other businesses in Tavistock to raise the roof and help raise funds for the children's charity by joining Harry Hawk, Jan Stewer and Uncle Tom Cobley. It has organized its own town centre event in St Eustachius' Church at 10.30 am.

Everyone is welcome to come along and sing to raise funds for Children in Need.

Schools throughout the county will be giving their rendition of the folk song on the morning of September 9 and this will aired on the Judi Spiers Show on Radio Devon at 9.15 am.

In the evening at 8pm pubs and clubs and even ad hoc choirs will be encouraged to join in when Radio Devon will be broadcasting from the fair itself.

Anyone can participate in the venture. All the information regarding the project is available on http://www.bbc.co.uk/devon">www.bbc.co.uk/devon — just click radio Devon, then Devon sings, where the music, words and registration form can be downloaded.

Tavistock Rotary Club President Wally Lake said that the Club and BBC Radio Devon were looking forward to a successful partnership to benefit the Children in Need appeal and he looked forward to seeing as many people as possible in St Eustachius for the 20 minute event.
