GET those guitars out — local musicians are again asked to get 'strummin' and pluckin' for Okehampton's annual Battle of the Bands competition.

The event, first held in 2004, is a musical talent show and festival designed to give local musicians, and especially young people, an incentive to form groups, write songs and practise their musical and performance skills in Okehampton.

Heats will take place in Okehampton Charter Hall on three consecutive Thursdays on July 16, 23 and 30, and the grand final takes place in Simmons Park on Saturday, August 8.

Organiser Richard Appleby said: 'Most of the entrants and audiences are from the Okehampton area and the effect on these young people and on local culture is ongoing.

'Groups continue to promote and perform at their own events in Okehampton and also at other locations.

'The event has remained non-profit making with all expenses and prizes being supplied by sponsorship and donations. Entry for musicians and audiences is free.'

He said the event was attracting entrants from other towns, including Exeter, Plymouth, Holsworthy, Truro and Tavistock.

'We plan to continue and develop the project still further for 2009 and the future. Suitable headline acts will be booked to pull in a wide range of ages and confirm the grand final as a family event.'

This year it is hoped the event might be able to link up with the Devon County Council-backed 'Mix for six' project, which is also promoting music in Okehampton in 2009.

In 2007 the event attracted more than 3,000 to Simmons Park, when Queen tribute band Gaga wowed the crowd.

Last year, despite atrocious weather, more than 1,000 supporters braved the elements to see Plymouth metal band Huron win the best band title followed by Underclass Strife in second and Tavistock band Adventures Of . . . in third.

The audience were also treated to tribute band The Beatlez from Merseyside, who played a series of classic tracks from the Fab Four.

This year it is hoped there will be a bumper crowd at the final 'providing opportunities and inspiration for the performers and the audience, as well as contributing to the cultural and social amenity of the town'.

The sponsorship target for 2009 is £7,000 and Richard would like to hear from potential backers (see details below).

This non-profit event is financially reviewed by the town clerk of Okehampton Town Council.
