Organised by th Mid-Devon Cycling Club this hugely popular mass participation challenge, through Dartmoor National Park, is rapidly establishing a reputation for helping turn occasional bike riders into accomplished leisure cyclists.
To be held on Sunday, June 24, 2012, the ride is a big exciting occasion, which attracts all ages and abilities from throughout the UK and far beyond.
Classified as a cyclo-sportive, the event awards unique granite trophies to all finishers and recognition for those beating set time standards, but it is not a race.
'The objective of a sportive is to provide a highly organised and supported ride which is capable of being undertaken by a very wide variety of participants.' said the event's organiser, Ken Robertson.
'From those in their mid teens to senior citizens of both genders and varying capabilities, all can rise to the challenge of a sportive, provided they have completed some basic preparation.
'Support for riders is exceptionally high and there is no need to keep stopping to check the map. Both routes are generously staffed by static marshals, while motorbike riders from the elite National Escort Group patrol the roads to help things flow smoothly. Every turn is clearly signposted and, as final back-up, riders are also provided with a detailed route card, although few need them. While riders are encouraged to start their ride carrying drinks and a little food, to keep them energised, the organisation lays on a lavish feed station, at Princetown, where supplies can be replenished from tables stocked with a wide variety of snacks.'
The start and finish area for both routes is located at Abbrook Park Sports and Social Club in Kingsteignton, near Newton Abbot.
