TAVISTOCK opened their winter squash season in the Plymouth Company Leagues on October 5 with a match against their old opponents David May Services.
David May Services have a strong side and Tavistock were again without their inspirational and charismatic captain, Steve Tripp.
Playing at Number 5, Peter Walshe fancied his chances against an older opponent Geoff Wooldridge.
Peter started with great determination and took the first game relatively easily. Geoff fought back and took the match 3 games to 1.
Next was a newcomer, Will Crosby, taking on Martin Budden. Martin has very powerful shots, but Will used this to his advantage producing an array of accurate drop shots that had Martin flat footed. Will won 3 games to 1.
Playing at Number 3, Mike Gray was drawn against Dave Cuthbert. Using a range of techniques and shots, Dave kept Mike running hard.
It looked like Mike was gaining the upper hand in the third game, but Dave managed to scramble a win by 3 games to 1.
Stuart Cox, playing at Number 2, came up against Martin Newberry, who is a versatile player. In a see-saw match that went on for a long time, Stuart gradually wore his opponent down and emerged a 3-2 winner.
With the match balanced, Pete Middleton at Number 1 played Cliff Drew.
Cliff made Peter work hard and took the game 3-0, so David May Services won the overall match with a score of 3-2.
Tavistock play Lloyds Bank next Tuesday and look for their first win.
ON October 9, members of Tavistock Squash Club were treated to an excellent course on marking and refereeing by Brian Gernett, who has refereed international and national matches.
