OKEHAMPTON and District Tennis Club juniors had another successful year with the U11s playing on Saturday mornings and the 12 to 16 year olds on Wednesday evenings, with two tournament days held during the summer.

A ladder competition was played throughout the summer by the over 11s, with the top eight going through to a play-off tournament as part of the Okehampton Sports and Fitness Festival.

Winners of the ladder tournament were Scott Green and Charlie Berry who both played consistently well throughout the summer.

The sports festival play-off produced a morning of high quality and exciting junior tennis with a number of very close matches.

The final was no exception with Tom Pengelley just beating Jack Davey by 14 points to 13.

On Wednesday August 19 the tennis club, in conjunction with Okehampton Community Recreation Association (OCRA), ran a one-day tennis camp. This attracted 17 children ranging from 8 to 14 year olds. The morning was spent practising with two tournaments held in the afternoon.

The standard of tennis was again of a good and exciting quality with players and organisers exhausted by the end of the afternoon.

The senior boys' tournament was won by Scott Green, winning all his matches, playing high quality tennis throughout.

The main tournament was won by Callum Ware with a good solid performance in all his matches.

Joint runners up and best young players were Benjamin Rogers and Ben Leigh-Tyrer.

With the return to school, junior tennis begins again in September.

The over 11s started on Wednesday at 7.pm. Saturday morning sessions start on September 5 at 10am for younger players from 4 years old to 7 and at 11am for children over 8.

With the exception of school holidays and weather permitting, all sessions will carry on throughout the winter.

Saturday morning sessions will move indoors at the beginning of November.
