The event was open to all primary schools in the area. Ian Hancock, West Devon Borough Council Sports Development Officer, said: ?It?s our first year and we have attracted eight entries, which is fantastic. It?s a solid base from which to build in future years.?
The gala is expected to be an annual event, with awards being given to the overall school winner and to the school with swimmers showing the best display of sportsmanship.
Schools that entered a team this year were Tavistock Community Primary, Gulworthy Primary, St Peter?s C of E Junior School, Mary Tavy and Brentor Primary, Walkhampton Primary, Whitchurch Primary, Horrabridge Primary and Princetown Primary.
Taking the Tavistock Swimming Club Schools trophy this year was Tavistock Community Primary and winning the fair play award, Princetown Primary.
Paul Chinn, Tavistock Swimming club coach, and event coordinator said: ?It was great to see some top competition from our local primary school swimmers. Tavistock, St Peter?s, and Whitchurch fought a close battle throughout to give us the top three places.
?Gulworthy, Mary Tavy and Brentor, Walkhampton and Horrabridge Primary all showed they could take some well deserved points in crucial races. And Princetown showed great spirit, competing without a full team.?
All competitors, along with any other local swimmers are welcome to join in one of the Tavistock Swimming Club Summer taster sessions at Meadowlands on Thursday August 7 or Thursday September 4 both starting at 6pm ? all ages welcome.
