YOUNG windsurfing champion Saskia Sills narrowly missed out on being crowned the BBC's Young Sports Personality of the Year this week.

Tavistock College student Saskia, 17, was one of ten young sports people to be shortlisted for the award, for her achievements in windsurfing.

She claimed a gold medal in the Under 19 Youth RS:X windsurfing class at the 2012 Four Star Pizza ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships, is the Royal Yachting Association Volvo youth national champion, won gold at the EUROSAF Youth Europeans and went on to claim the under 17 world title.

The shortlist was drawn up from nominations made by a panel of judges chaired by BBC Sport's John Inverdale.

Three contenders for the award were chosen from the ten nominations — Jessica-Jane Applegate (swimmer), Josef Craig (swimmer) and Rebecca Tunney (gymnast) — Josef was announced as the overall winner at the awards held on Sunday evening.
