A RECORD entry could be on the cards for this year?s Ruby Run, which takes place next Sunday. The event, first started four years ago, has now become a popular sporting event in the West Devon calendar. Run between Hatherleigh and Holsworthy, this year the race will start at Holsworthy ? the route reputed to be the quicker of the two as it slightly more downhill. Registration for the run takes place at Kivells Market in Holsworthy from 8am on the morning of the event ? those who are walking the course may start straight away, with the actual being started at 10.30am by West Devon and Torridge MP Geoffrey Cox. There are regular water stops along the way and marshalls ? sun lotion is also provided free, which could be a bonus as traditionally, race day has always proved to be warm and sunny. Roy Smith, race director, said: ?Normally we get about 250 runners but I think this year we are heading for a record entry. Theoretically we can cope with up to 500 ? the only problem would be that the T-shirt, which everyone gets, might have to be sent by post.? Mr Smith said the race was proving ever more popular ? nearly every year it attracted runners from all over the country and even from abroad. ?It should be a lovely day,? said Mr Smith. Prizes for the top placed runners have been donated by Waitrose and Parklands in Okehampton, which is also donating a free swim for every entrant. The top three runners in the male and female categories will also receive a piece of Ruby crystal, donated by Dartington Crystal. The prizes will be presented by Geoffrey Cox. Buses have been laid on at Hatherleigh and Holsworthy, to enable runners to be returned to their cars where necessary. Anyone who would like to know more about the race on Sunday June 11 should call Carole Smith on 01837 811266.
