THE Royal British Legion Tavistock branch will be holding a service of remembrance on Friday, July 1 at the Tavistock Town War Memorial to commemorate the Battle of the Somme.

The service will start around 10.50am to commemorate the centenary of the first day of this battle which started on July 1, 1916, and which had such devastating losses on the armed forces.

Malcolm Christie, chairman of the Tavistock RNLI?branch, said: ‘The act of remembrance will remind us of the enormous debt that we owe to those who fought and were injured in body or mind, and the enormous number of brave souls who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country in that battle and indeed in all conflicts before and since.’

A two minute silence will be held at 11am.
