TAVISTOCK Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club's all important county trophy game against a Civil Service team was finally abandoned after seven ends when players found themselves paddling in an inch of water and the bowls were producing bow waves as they progressed down the green.
The match will resume on Thursday with the scoreboards set at the scores they displayed when players ran for shelter. At the time of abandonment, Ron Cooper was the only Tavistock skip in a winning position.
Wednesday's home game against Plympton resulted in each side winning three of the six rinks played. The match was won by Tavistock 114-92 thanks to their three winning rinks achieving higher winning margins than Plympton's winning rinks.
Skip Henny Bawden saw her team of David Perry, Sandy Sanders and Mike Vine, playing in his first match, win 19-11, while skip Marion Allen led her team of Colin Craven, Ernie Piper and Derek Bradford to a 21-9 victory.
Club captain Mile Allen achieved a 33-14 win thanks to his team of Joyce Drew, Stan Finn and Wallace Northey, whose excellent game contributed much to the margin of victory.
Tavistock skips Roy Northam (11-18), Norman Paramor (13-17) and Jill Lacayo (17-23) all saw their rinks lose.
The match against Looe resulted in a 135-84 victory for the visitors who won five of the six rinks played. Tavistock's only winning rink was skipped by Derek Bradford, who led his squad of Ray Meneer, Charlie Cummings and Jenny Alderidge to a 23-12 win.
Tavistock skips Sandy Sanders (13-27), Ron Cooper (15-21), Bernie Downs (8-31) and Norman Paramor (13-15) all saw their teams lose.
Saturday's visit by Barnstaple saw both side winning three rinks, with the visitors taking the match 105-95, thanks to achieving higher winning margins. Tavistock's three winning teams were Tom Sharp (skip), Pauline Finn, Fred Hodge and Val Southern who won 21-12.
Skip Roy Northam led his team of Charlie Cummings, Catriona Meek and Shirley Blackburn to a 21-7 victory, while skip Jill Lacayo's team of Albert Townsend, Vic Doidge and Stan Finn won 19-12. Losing skips were Arthur Worth (6-26), Rob Bowhay (17-28) and Walter Meek (11-20).
The ladies' section played only one match during the week and that was a tough league fixture against league title contenders Yealmpton. Tavistock ladies won both rinks played, to secure an overall 49-25 victory.
Skip Jean Flay and her team of Yvonne Meneer, Jill Lacayo and Marlene Paramor won 28-13, while skip Marion Allen led her team of Hazel Lovell, Gill Saunders and Freda Isaac to a 21-12 victory.
