A LIVE event likely to shake the foundations of Tavistock Pannier Market has been organised to welcome the new century.

An exciting line up of groups has been booked for the Millennium Rock Night, which kicks off at 8pm on January 8.

'It's going to be the biggest bash seen in Tavistock for years,' said Ray Stenning, who has organised the Rock Night.

Headlining the gig are Cornwall's top surf rockers Rootjoose. 'They were very keen to play — we hope they will be a big draw.

'I don't think people will recognise the pannier market — it will be transformed by Rootjoose's fantastic lighting equipment,' he said.

'What a great Christmas present a ticket would be for someone!'

Joining Rootjoose will be the Tavistock-based Bus Station Loonies, who did well in this year's national Undiscovered Originals talent competition .

Also in the line up are Froot Moose, an up-and-coming 70s retro band of ex-Callington College students who won the south west regional finals of the Search for a Star competition in September, netting a £1,000 prize which helped towards producing their first CD.

The band play covers of 70s sounds with an up-beat 90s feel. They are gradually introducing their own material into the act and won the talent competition with one of their own numbers.

Completing the full Millennium Rock Night line-up are Lizard Like Me, a group which includes popular Hatstand ex-member Richard Harris.

There will be a full bar available at the event, courtesy of the Bedford Hotel, and refreshments are being provided.

David Glover, secretary of the Millennium Rock Night organising committee, said: 'Tavistock Round Table, Rotary and 31 Club wanted to organise something to enable young people to celebrate the new Millennium.

'We are working with other organisations to enable that to happen and hope everyone will get together to celebrate.'

Tickets are £7.50 on the door, or £6 in advance from Red Planet Records, The Wharf, the Ordulph Arms and the Market Inn.

Profits from the evening will benefit local charities in the area.
