LAMERTON Primary School is competing for part of a £50,000 prize fund in a national schools recycling campaign.
Around 1,200 schools across the UK will participate in the Yellow Woods Challenge 2003/4 by bringing in old Yellow Pages to recycle.
For every pound awarded to the schools who collect the most directories, a matching pound is given to the Woodland Trust to help keep the UK?s native woodland alive.
West Devon Borough Council is organising this year?s challenge and is encouraging schools in the Plymouth and Cornwall directory area to recycle old Yellow Pages which feature sandcastles on the cover.
Schools could win up to £300 locally and then compete nationally for the chance to win up to £2,000.
All participating schools are given free environmental educational materials which, along with the campaign?s fun mascot Kirk, help bring recycling and woodland conservation messages to life in the classroom.
The old directories will be recycled into animal bedding by the Cornwall Paper Company. Old yellow pages directories can also be recycled at the recycling bank situated in the Safeway supermarket in Tavistock until the end of February.
