DON Rendell — a talented multi-instrumentalist and established senior member of the British jazz scene for half a century — comes to Tavistock on Friday April 19.

He has been described as a most distinctive and creative musician. His early influences were those of Lester Young and John Coltrane but these days he has very much a 'voice of his own'.

In the early 50s he played in the Johnny Dankworth Septet, before forming his own group which on one occasion accompanied Billie Holiday. Don also played on tour in both the Stan Kenton Orchestra and the Woody Herman Band.

He has led many successful groups and has worked with Ian Carr, Stan Tracey, Barbara Thompson and many others. He has a considerable reputation as a teacher at both the Royal Academy and the Guildhall School of Music.

Don was born in Plymouth, and on Friday April 19 he will be playing at the Ordulph Arms supported by the very fine Tony Marshall Trio.

The event is organised by the Tamar Valley Jazz Association which welcomes this eminent musician 'back to his roots'.
