Tavistock 38 South Molton 7 IN atrocious conditions at Sandy Park on Saturday Tavistock scored a resounding victory reversing their defeat away at South Molton on the first Saturday of the season. The weather was against the expansive game that Tavistock had planned to play and as a result they had to mix driving forward play before spinning the ball wide to use their speedy backs. Tavistock opened their account inside ten minutes when full back Alex Hudson was given space for him to dart over. The second try midway through the half came from Jake Phillips who finished off good forward pressure where Adrian Baker and Tom Hurdwell were prominent. Josh Sutton added the conversion. Tavistock continued to press for a third try and they thought it had come when wing Joe Lane crossed in the right corner. Unfortunately the referee judged that Joe had lost control of the ball before grounding it. About this time Tavistock were forced to make a change in the forwards when Will Brown was forced to leave the field. Will was replaced by Matt Cole who added experience to the back row. South Molton did briefly threaten the Tavistock line with some driving mauls but these were repelled. From a scrum deep in their own half Tavistock won a scrum against the head and scrum half Lee Greatrex picked up the ball and raced down the touchline to score a superb individual try. Although playing against the strong wind in the second half Tavistock continued to dominate the game. The first try of the half came when from a scrum the ball was moved right via Josh Sutton and Duncan Law to Neil Evans. Evans then used his pace to run in a long-range try beating a number of defenders in the process. The second try of the half came after good interplay and Matt Cole drove over close to the posts. Late in the second half Tavistock lost second row Andy Hunt with an elbow injury and as they had used all three replacements they were forced to play the final few minutes with fourteen men. South Molton took advantage of their numerical superiority in the forwards to score a converted try. Tavistock had the last word however when the backs moved the ball left and wing man Ben Neale ignoring Colin Smerdon unmarked outside him scored. Josh Sutton converted all the second half tries. In their next league fixture Tavistock travel to Honiton on the April 8.
