IT was good to read of the much deserved award of the Freedom of Tavistock which is to be bestowed on Mr Ted Sherrell. He is a delightful man — very good company, and one who has always worked, to the best of his ability, for Tavistock and West Devon.

Reading about this made me think about all the men and women who do so much in our community, and especially about those who back them up — wives who always make sure that their husbands always go out smartly attired and who have a meal and soothing hand ready when they return exhausted from their labour. These ladies are always there to talk over the affairs of the day, often contributing much good advice behind the scenes.

Also, we must not forget the husbands, who do not take part in public life but give tremendous support to their wives who do.

I was always grateful for the help and advice of my wife over 55 years of marriage. Since she passed away and during the last three years I have acquired the support of a loving partner who helps me in all I try to do as well as being a hard-working public servant herself.

We do well to remember all those who work so hard behind the scenes.
