BLOWZONE, Tavistock's community wind band, starts its new year of rehearsals at Tavistock College on Thursday, September 11 at 8pm. A wind band is a group comprising wind instruments, plus percussion. All the woodwind instruments are included: flutes, clarinets, oboe, bassoon, plus all the sizes of saxophone and the full variety of the brass section. As wind bands are a regular and popular type of ensemble, a lot of music has been written or arranged for them. Blowzone's sizeable library holds film music — Pirates of the Caribbean is a firm favourite, as is the Harry Potter theme and the medley of John Williams hits. Also included are classical favourites —Vaughan Williams' English Folk Song Suite is a regular piece, as is Khachaturian's Sabre Dance — big band music and more, such as the theme tune from the Muppets, which seems to be a signature tune of the band. Members range from teenagers to pensioners, and while there are one or two expert players, most members are still learning and developing with their multifarious instruments. The whole group is kept on the straight and narrow by its musical director, Peter Jones. His mixture of coaching, anecdote and insult makes every rehearsal interesting and productive for all attending. The band make three or four public appearances each year, the next being a joint concert in February 2015. Blowzone is a friendly bunch that rehearse every other Thursday evening in Tavistock College and would love to welcome new members.
