A STEP forward may have been made in the campaign to erect vertical banners in Tavistock?s Bedford Square. The idea has been promoted by the town council, which would like to see vertical banners being suspended from lamp-posts in the town centre ? similar to the style of banner outside the town?s library in Plymouth Road. Members believe the vertical banners would look smarter than the existing banner strung between the town hall and Court Gate and would be a good way of promoting events in the town. But until now, West Devon Borough planning officers have resisted the idea, claiming consent would not be granted for such a move as the banners would be inappropriate in the town?s conservation area. Now town mayor Cllr Jenny Metcalf and Cllr Norma Woodcock have met the borough?s planning and conservation officers in an attempt to dissolve the stalement. Cllr Metcalf said: ?They are preparing a drawing of the type of banner they suggest we could possibly have. ?One banner might possibly be hung from a lamp-post on the corner of the churchyard or possibly another on the opposite corner, at the end of Plymouth Road.? Cllr Metcalf said the banner would replace the horizontal one between the town hall and Court Gate, advertising events in the pannier market and town hall. ?The town hall management have produced a list of the number of times the banner goes up for various events. They were absolutely adamant they didn?t want a row of banners. ?I feel they are trying to be accommodating. I think we?re going in the same direction ? it?s a lovely town, when you come down from almost any direction it looks gorgeous, but I think you can enhance it without stripping away all knowledge of what?s going on in the town.? Cllr Woodcock said: ?We are working together to enhance and complement our wonderful town and I am sure they agree now that we do need to be able to show what events are going on. I think we understood each other?s position.?
