WEST Devon ratepayers could be forced to fork out an extra £4 on their annual council tax bill, if proposals to increase car parking charges in borough-owned car parks are rejected.

The warning comes as the suggested increases are advertised in car parks and in the Times this week — part of a public consultation before councillors finally settle the issue at a meeting next month.

Cllr Nick Morgan, chairman of West Devon's strategic development committee, said the one hour car parking charge of 40p had remained the same since 1995.

He said: 'It was always councillors' intention to consult fully but we needed to agree proposed new charges amongst ourselves before we asked people for their opinions.

'Councillors will take all views into consideration before making this difficult decision. We will also take into account the new charges of other councils in the area.'

Businessmen and chambers of commerce in Tavistock and Okehampton have criticised the increases, worried they will drive shoppers away.

Mark Hall, borough head of commercial services, said the rise would limit the amount of council tax paid by West Devon residents and ensure people who use the car parks pay for them.

He said: 'If car parking charges are not increased this year every household will have to pay an additional £3 to £4 in tax.'

Mr Hall urged people to write to him in support or against the proposals as soon as possible — he added that members of the public are also welcome to attend the meeting at the council offices in Okehampton on February 20 at 4.30pm.
