TRUE to their word, Canadian tourists 'Ontario Trilliums' returned to St Francis Drake Bowling Club seeking to avenge their recent defeat at the hands of the Tavistock club.
Unfortunately, the match had to be curtailed due to rain with just over half played. At the close of play the Canadian team were winning 60-48, with Tavistock ahead on only two of the five rinks being played.
Tavistock's winning skips at this point were Bernie Downs (10-9) and Tom Sharp (14-6). The other Tavistock rinks, led by skips John Smith, Lionel Sims and Betty Browse, were some 21 shots down between them.
The week had started well for the Tavistock club, with Monday's club night in-house competition attracting more than 30 members for an enjoyable evening.
Tuesday evening saw the men's section playing their county trophy away fixture at Plymco Unity Park, Plymouth, and winning 96-64 with skip Colin Tremaine leading his team of Clive Jago, Norman Paramor and Der Saunders to a 33-15 win.
Club captain, Mike Allen's team of Colin Craven, Phil Jury and Rob Bowhay notched up a 30-15 win and Pat Sykes led his team of Tony Coombs, Roy Northam and Malcolm Bloomer to a narrow 18-15 victory. The remaining rink of Ron Cooper (skip), Sandy Sanders, John Smith and Bernie Downs, lost 15-19.
Thursday saw the men's section playing their second county trophy match of the week, this time at home to a Peverell Park team. Tavistock won three and drew the fourth of the four rink match with an overall score of 85-63.
Skip Bernie Downs saw his team of Sandy Sanders, John Smith and Lionel Sims win 25-11, while the team of Clive Jago, Norman Paramor and Der Saunders were led to a 24-19 victory by skip Colin Tremaine.
Club captain Mike Allen's team of Colin Craven, Phil Jury and Rob Bowhay achieved a 20-17 win whilst Pat Sykes skipped his team of Malcolm Bloomer, Roy Northam and Tony Coombs to a hard fought 16-16 draw.
The ladies' section played its only game of the week at Lee Moor on Tuesday and came away 36-21 shot winners, thanks to winning one rink and drawing the other.
Skip Hazel Lovell led her team of Betty Browse, Dorice Hicks and Marlene Paramor to a 18-3 win, while Tavistock ladies' captain Jean Flay skipped her team of Gill Saunders, Shirley Thorington and Freda Issac during their creditable 18-18 draw.
