THE torrential rain on Saturday morning did not deter 21 Tidy Tavi volunteers as they set out into Tavistock to clear litter and generally help to clean up the town.

Many of these intrepid individuals were new volunteers who had made New Year resolutions to help out in the community.

In addition, Theo and Jack, two students from Devonport High School, assisted as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award scheme commitments.

Tidy Tavi organisers expressed thanks to all those who braved the elements and received a good soaking for their efforts. This included a special thanks to the two members of staff from the Plymouth Road Tesco store who joined the enterprise as part of an ongoing community support project.

Tidy Tavi volunteers said litter picking in heavy rain was especially difficult because the rubbish collected was heavy and there was inevitably a lot of spray from passing vehicles. Nevertheless, clearing such detritus was especially important as it often blocked drains causing local flooding.

Several volunteers commented on the curious satisfaction to be gained by removing a plastic carrier bag from a drain cover, then watching the deluge of accumulated water pouring off the road into the depths.

Tidy Tavi’s litter-picking ventures occur on the first Saturday of every month, except in special circumstances. The next one will be on Saturday, February 6.

If you would like to join in the fun, come rain or shine; please meet at the Meadowlands Leisure Centre at 10 am. No previous experience is required!
