TAMAR and Tavy rowers put in a supreme effort at Fowey Regatta, roused by the tribe of Tavonians cheering Ginette from the quay. The squads, junior, veteran, ladies and mixed, worked hard, particularly on the homeward leg with a challenging breeze and spring tide and were rewarded by the ladies and veterans earning a bottle of champagne. The T&T juniors ? Alex Newton, Lisa Baker, Jen Young, Matt Walker, Taryn Gaye, Ed Hillson with club chairman Bob Turner at the helm ? entered the race for 16 years and under. The opposition held some sturdy 16 year olds and the T&T crew some 13 and 14 year olds who rowed incredibly well, holding third place for most of the race and taking sixth place in a fleet of nine. The crew gave 100% effort and achieved their best result of the season against strapping opposition on a long course. The ladies? fleet was large and split into three seeded races with T&T in the second race. After a cracking start, Nicky Sellers, Kate Reeves, Julie Williams, Sam Adlam, Helen Dickenson and Helen Smith ran a close race against Kerens (Mevagissy) and Cadmus (Salcombe). A neat buoy turn and good line towards the finish by cox Jack Baker put the crew in the winning position. The ladies fought against the tide, despite tiring, with the other boats inching towards them they pushed on and triumphant took first place. Not to be outdone, the veteran team ? Bruce Horner, Ann Jeffries, Margaret Cartwright, John Rogers, Peter Clarke and Graham Hodgson ? after a confusing start went on to row as they had never rowed before urged on by cox Kate Reeves. Their magnificent effort on a long course was also rewarded by a bottle of champagne. Meanwhile, Ginette was out again with the mixed crew of Mark Hancock, Pete Sellers, Richard Young, Helen Dickenson, Julie Williams, Ruth Walker and cox Kate Reeves. Boat builder Brian Nobbs was delighted to see Ginette, named after his wife, doing so well in the run up to the Newquay championships and the Great River Race. Thanks were extended to the towing, prep and recovery team. Those interested in gig rowing are encouraged to contact Robin Musgrave, on 01822 841064 as there is scope for the club to enter more teams in forthcoming events.
