A COMMEMORATE oak tree was planted at The Clinton School at Merton last Wednesday to mark the 350th anniversary of the Coldstream Guards founded by Merton man George Monck.

Members of the regiment were led by Colonel of the Coldstream Guards and former commander of the United Nations Protection force in Bosnia General Sir Michael Rose, who planted the tree at the entrance to the school with help from the schoolchildren.

The school has had close links with the Coldstream Guards for over 60 years and visits have been made by members of the regiment to the school in the past to enable children to learn more about its history.

The General described the Coldstream Guards as the 'most distinguished regiment in the British Army'.

'The standards set by the Coldstream, helping their fellow men, serving Queen and country, their loyalty and courage, would all help young people in their lives today,' he said.
