ASIDE from the highly publicised campaigns that took place in the run up to May 5, five pupils from Lew Trenchard Primary School have been embroiled in their own struggle for electoral victory. Megan Nash, Jacob Knight, Alice Stemson, Tom Smith and Harry Jones all campaigned with policies engineered to address the highly contentious issues of insufficient school outings, the threat posed to students by careless drivers and how to alleviate poverty in the Third World. Campaigning began in earnest with a huge poster drive and rousing speeches followed by the production and screening of their own party political broadcasts as the ballot box drew nearer. Candidate Jacob Knight said he was feeling ?confident and excited? about the imminent elections, but his convictions proved misplaced some time later when Tom Smith was revealed to have the highest share of the vote. Headteacher Ali Sedgwick said, ?the children have enjoyed learning about democracy with the elections which have linked in with their History lessons on Ancient Greece.?
