LIKE Rebecca Joynes (Letters, June 30), I feel that the young of this town will be getting a very raw deal if the application to have a night club at King?s is turned down. Cllr Sherrell is totally opposed; it is in the wrong location, he says. Well, for a lot of residents so was the Crown Centre. The young must have some venue here in Tavistock for their entertainment. To have the expense and problems of going to Plymouth when King?s already exists seems farcical. One mother told me that her son went to Plymouth because of the closure of the Crown Centre. He had to take a taxi back; the Plymouth taxi driver refused to go further than Bedford Square so, at 1.30 in the morning, his mother had to get in her car and collect him! It seems to me that the King?s management are doing everything in their power to dampen down noise and avoid nuisance but are being unfairly criticised for their efforts to help the young of Tavistock. David Farrant, Quarry House Butcher Park Hill Tavistock I HAVE been a member of the Tavistock town community for well over 12 years now. I live in a quiet, close-knit residential area near to King?s. In recent years I have noticed an increase in the disturbance caused by those attending parties at the venue. The family car has been repeatedly vandalised, our garden trespassed and littered, and the area treated with complete disrespect. I cannot begin to imagine how the situation would escalate should the venue be used regularly as a commercial nightclub. In reply to a letter posted in last week?s edition of the Times I would like to add that those in favour of the plans should consider that they may feel differently if a nightclub were to be ?given a chance? to open just yards from their homes. Many claim that there is ?nothing to do? in Tavistock . . . I am 18 years old and never find myself bored in this town . . . its beauty and atmosphere are fantastic and it would be a terrible shame to risk spoiling this. If other residents see a necessity for a nightclub to open, I would suggest that a location in a non-residential area would be more appropriate. Name and address supplied
