WITH half marathon in the town for the very first time, Hannah Colston, sports development officer at West Devon Borough Council and Mhairi McCall, Community Activator for 5x30 Devonwide came up with the idea for a primary school half marathon, running a mile a week until 12 miles was reached and then finishing their last 1.1 mile on the day of the new Tavy 13 race.

The idea was fully embraced by Tavistock Athletic Club and all primary schools in the area were approached. Tavistock Community , Whitchurch, St Peter's, Mary Tavy/Brentor, Bickleigh Down Lamerton and Horrabridge Primary Schools all took up the challenge.

Mhairi and Adam Holland, Tavistock's world record marathon runner started up an informal Run in the park for those unable to join their school running club.

There were 138 participants on the day with ages ranging from 6-11 years old. The sun put its hat on and the inaugural Primary Challenge was a great success!

The run in the park is so popular that 5x30 Activator Mhairi and Adam are continuing it throughout the summer. If you would like to run a mile round the Meadows just turn up at the green hut on a Wednesday at 5pm. There is no cost involved.

5x30 is a non-profit making group helping to increase physical activity opportunities for Devon Communities. There is funding available to help new clubs start up and instructors to be trained.
