THE 16th Century Bearslake Inn at Sourton has won a top award in a national campaign to recognise the role Britain?s prettiest pubs play in helping to preserve the best aspects of the country?s built environment.
Hundreds of pubs, bars and other hostelries from all over the UK competed for this recognition, launched by The Green Organisation to commemorate the Queen?s Golden Jubilee and celebrate our national architectural heritage.
The Sourton inn was named Britain?s prettiest pub ?South West champion? in the award scheme as part of the organisation?s well established and prestigious Green Apple Environmental Awards campaign.
A Green Organisation spokesman said: ?The Golden Jubilee is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pay tribute to the role played by pubs and their owners in helping to preserve and promote some of the better examples of Britain?s public buildings.?
Entries were not restricted to thatch and beam establishments, but examples of any buildings that contributed to the overall environmental picture, including newer constructed city centre pubs.
?We had a terrific response to our appeal, which demonstrates the great pride that we all take in the attractive buildings that are such an important part of our heritage and traditions,? added the spokesman.
Owners of the Bearslake Inn Sue and Phil Acton said they were delighted with this accolade, which was their first since taking over the pub 18 months ago.
?This is one of the oldest pubs around with all its original features including fireplaces, stone walls, original beams and slate floors,? said Mrs Acton.
?But not only does it have the looks, it has the warm and friendly family atmosphere that the judges were also looking for.?
The Green Organisation is dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice.
Their Green Apple Awards for countries, companies, councils and communities are in their ninth successful year and widely recognised as the ultimate accolade for environmental endeavours.
