POLICE are increasing officer numbers on Friday and Saturday nights in Okehampton following a fight which got out of hand at the weekend resulting in the arrest of two men.
PC Ken Dine explained that the incident escalated after the two individuals were ejected from Neros Nightclub for disorderly behaviour.
?A large number of people exited the club and became embroiled in the incident,? he said.
?CS spray was used to protect the officers until a further police unit arrived.?
He praised the doorstaff at Neros who assisted in helping the police: ?Had it not been for them the situation would have escalated further,? he said.
?There were only two officers in Okehampton that evening because others were either committed to escorting a prisoner to Exeter or covering Hatherleigh Carnival.?
At the height of the fracas just after 1pm, 25 individuals were involved and CS spray was used on ten, said the officer.
In light of last weekend?s disorder, police will be increasing officer numbers in Okehampton at weekends to deal with any further incidents.
PC Dine said: ?Nightclubs and public houses reserve the right to refuse admission to whoever they choose and people acting disorderly can be ejected from premises.
?There are some individuals in this town who seem to think they have the right to go into venues and cause trouble and do whatever they wish ? this is not the case.
?Weekends can be problematic at the moment because of a certain minority of people but whoever is found committing these offences will be arrested and dealt with.?
