POLICE in Bere Alston are appealing for information surrounding a year-old case where a woman was allegedly attacked by a group of young men and raped.

The woman, who is in her thirties, was assaulted by three young men as she walked along The Close in Bere Alston, between 7pm and 7.30pm on January 15 last year.

The incident was originally reported and investigated as an unprovoked assault without any sexual motive ? no arrests were made.

A further allegation has now been made by the woman that she was raped by one of the men.

Investigating officer DC Dave Elliot said: ?The initial investigation was of common assault. We have since received a new allegation of rape by the victim.

?In view of the seriousness of this, we would ask people who may have been in the vicinity at the time to cast their minds back.?

The young men involved were all aged approximately in their late teens.

The first was of small to medium build and clean shaven. He was wearing a dark hooded top and dark tracksuit bottoms with a light coloured stripe on the leg, which angled away at the ankle.

The second man was of medium build, with dark hair cut in a long crew cut style ? he was clean shaven. He was wearing a dark, long-sleeved sweatshirt with white writing on the front, dark coloured baggy jeans and old white trainers.

The third man was slim, with mousey blond/brown short cut hair ? he was also clean shaven. He was wearing light blue jeans and a long-sleeved top.

DC Elliott said at the time of the incident, a young couple, possibly teenagers, were seen sitting on the park bench.

Police are keen to identify this young couple and are appealing to anyone who was in the area of Underways, the park, The Close or Cornwall Street at the time to contact them at Tavistock Police Station via 08705 777444, quoting reference JT/02/28.
