AN anthrax check was run on an envelope delivered to a Bere Alston address on Tuesday after a woman who opened it became suspicious.

Mrs Christine Horn, of Ezenridge, said the envelope was simply addressed to 'The proprietor'. When she opened it she found there was no letter inside.

'I rang the police non-urgent advice line. They made the decision to call out the emergency services as they carry equipment to check and make safe any possible risk to the public,' said Mrs Horn.

Police arrived along with Devon Fire and Rescue and an ambulance. The fire service recovered the item.

'They were very nice. I asked if I had done the right thing and they said "most certainly". I feel that if you see anything suspicious you should contact the police,' said Mrs Horn.

She had full praise for the officers involved. 'I'd like to thank the police and emergency services for the prompt and efficient way they dealt with the situation.'

A police spokesman said the envelope was 'considered low risk'.

'It was dealt with in a proper manner and disposed of,' he said.
