TAVISTOCK Rugby Club has named its bar after a stalwart member of the club who died in October.
Peter Garland was the club’s secretary and had been at the heart of the club for many years, with many players and their families remembering him fondly as always being the first person to greet you as you entered the premises.
Club chairman Bob Boreham said: ‘Peter has been at the heart of our club for more years than I can remember and was nearly always the first person who greeted you the moment you entered the premises, whether you were a visiting team, a supporter, a referee, a new player or a parent of a potential mini or junior player making first contact with the club.
‘As well as managing and running the bar with all that that involved, Peter always made the time to take a genuine interest in everyone with whom he came in contact. He will be greatly missed by generations of club members and users for years to come.’
Following a suggestion from club and team members, it has been agreed that the club bar should be named The Peter Garland Bar to commemorate his legacy.
A plaque was unveiled on December 3 following the home games of both the club’s first and second teams and a minute’s applause and moment’s silence to reflect on Peter’s life was held prior to kick off of those matches.
Fundraising on the day will go to The Devon Air Ambulance.Pictures by James Bird
