THE Salvation Army, a worldwide Christian Evangelical organisation, founded by William Booth in 1865 in the East End of London, will be celebrating its 150th anniversary next year. Booth became the Army's first General, having been a Methodist revivalist preacher. Throughout its time the Salvation Army has been noted for its work with the poor and for its brass bands. It always proved an uplifting experience to attend one of their services in Tavistock on a Sunday evening at the United Reformed Church in Russell Street. My friend Mrs Mary Budge recently raised over £400 in sponsorship for her bicycle ride, and this Saturday (October 11) will be having afternoon tea from 2pm to 4.30pm at the United Reformed Church, and an evening concert at 7pm at the Tavistock Methodist Church. All this for Mary's work with children in India. A lady worthy of our support! Tony Smith Lydford
