A MAGICAL night is in store for those at the second Okehampton Lantern Procession later this month.

Organised by Wren Music, the event on Saturday, February 23 is open to all, whether to join in, to watch the procession through the streets or at Simmons Park. The event is free thanks to financial support from Okehampton United Charity.

Last year's inaugural event saw two procession groups leave Giblands and Okehampton Rugby Club, walking through the town. Crowds lined the streets as both processions, inspired by the East and West Okement rivers weaved their way through the streets to the finale at Simmons Park, where lanterns were hung in trees, and lantern carriers were greeted with songs by the West Devon Folk Choir and Okehampton Youth Roots Ensemble in the park bandstand.

Adults and youngsters alike are being invited to make lanterns for the procession during workshops throughout the half-term week. From Monday, February 18 to Friday, February 22, Okehampton Rugby Club will host workshops from 10am to 12.30pm, 2pm to 4.30pm and 6pm to 8pm. Wren Music staff will be on hand to help people make their lanterns.

Lanterns can be made in around two hours, depending on design and size. No experience is necessary and all materials are provided for free. Attendees are asked to not wear their best clothes, as the workshops can be a bit messy.

For health and safety reasons, only lanterns made with Wren Music can take part in the procession. Children of primary school age and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times, and at the evening workshops, all under 16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
