AN auction of promises in aid of Fairplace United Church's refurbishment fund takes place next week.

There are nearly 100 promises which will be going under the hammer, from a weekend stay in London and one weeks holiday accommodation at a local property next year, down to cakes, preserves and DIY sessions.

Other promises include free entry to a number of attractions, a tour of the Houses of Parliament, a trip on Dartmoor Railway and panto ticket for Dick Whittington in Plymouth with travel.

This is Fairplace Church's centenary year and along with a series of events to mark the occasion, the church is also hoping to clear the remaining debt on the refurbishment of the church premises which took place four years ago.

The auction takes place in Fairplace Schoolroom on Friday, October 3, doors open at 6pm, with the auction to begin at 7pm.

The catalogue of promises can be obtained from the 50/50 shop in the Arcade and the Terry Bennett centre at the front of the church.

Advance bids can be entered by phoning 01837 52926. Auctioneer on the evening will be Deryck Stephens, admission is free and light refreshments will be served.

Churchgoers are currently marking the church's 100th anniversary with a year and more of centennial celebrations.

A stone outside the church bears the date 1903, but because of a boundary dispute the opening of the church did not actually take place until March 1904.

Faced with this confusion, the Church Council decided to hold thirteen months of celebration which began with a church banquet on May 31, and will end with closing festivities on Sunday, June 27.

Some thirty guest preachers have been invited to lead the Sunday services during the year, the majority of whom have family or other links with the church.

The church is open each Saturday morning when tea, coffee and refreshments are available to all, commemorative mugs are on sale, a Craft Fayre is due to take place on November 1, with a flower festival also planned for next year.
