A BROADWOODKELLY woman will celebrate her fiftieth birthday on a marathon Land?s End to John O?Groats cycle ride for charity. Louise Jackson set out on Sunday on the 1,053-mile cycle ride, which will take her up the western side of the country and then through central Scotland to the most northerly point of the British mainland. The ride, in aid of the South West Children?s Hospice, will see Louise cycling an average of 65 miles a day ? and distances of nearly 90 miles on some of those legs. The challenge is a lifelong ambition of Louise?s ? though she did not set off without a few apprehensions. She said: ?I think the weather may be the biggest headache for me ? especially as Scotland can often get frosts in June and the wind is legendary.? She added: ?To keep the cost down I have opted for camping ? something I haven?t done for 17 years so it might prove to be an experience!? Louise has been training for the event for the last six months. She has cycled the London to Brighton cycle route in the past, as well as a route across the Pyrenees ? but hasn?t done a long distance ride for ten years. The route she is cycling has been carefully planned to use quiet roads through scenic countryside avoiding major ?A? roads and urban areas. ?There isn?t any choice in some areas, such as Bristol, Manchester and Glasgow, though,? she said. Louise will be posting photographs and updates on her progress to a website during the ride, so that sponsors can monitor how she?s doing. Husband Gavin, who is managing the couple?s farm in her absence, said: ?The site?s good fun, and she?s been getting 50-60 hits a day. ?Word seems to be getting around, and she?s been getting support from all over the world.? The South West Children?s Hospice, which Louise is raising money for, is a charity which offers respite, relaxation and support to around 200 terminally-ill children and their families, every year. It has two centres - one in Barnstaple, and another near Bristol - which help families to care for a sick child, and offer them support in bereavement. The centres cost around £6 million to run every year. To sponsor Louise and support the hospice, please visit her website at http://www.le2jog2007.co.uk">www.le2jog2007.co.uk
