Exeter University 1
Hatherleigh 3
IN a game of two contrasting halves played in gale force winds Hatherleigh provided the shock of the day.
With the wind against them in the first half they defended like heroes, and with the ball scarcely going outside the penalty box from goal kicks they were constantly under pressure.
The first real attack they mounted proved fruitful, with Jamie Halpin beating his man and running 50 yards to lay the ball off to Stuart Dymond, who coolly slotted past the keeper into the corner of the net.
Hatherleigh managed to hold out until almost half-time, but the students levelled with a well taken goal through Saul Bloxham.
The second half saw the roles reversed but it was the students who started the better, but though they played good football they were always thwarted by either the wind or the visitors' defence.
Hatherleigh began to peg the home side back, and following a long throw from Gary Knight, Simon James' header, helped by the wind, found the net.
University threw men forward in the closing stages but to no avail, and when the visitors were awarded a free kick just outside the box Knight's deft chip found Nathaniel Davey.
He flicked the ball on for Patrick Jones, who sealed the students' fate with a well struck goal.
This week Hatherleigh are at home to Wonford in the third round of the East Devon Senior Cup.
