PUPILS at a Dartmoor primary school are achieving well and benefiting from good quality care and support, say education inspectors.
They say Princetown Primary School has made significant improvements and is set to get even better in the future.
'All groups of pupils achieve well and enjoy their learning,' they say. 'Pupils benefit from good teaching with positive relationships, good use of technology and careful support, leading to good progress.'
Parents are pleased with the school and one typically told the inspectors: 'Our child is very excited to go to school each morning.'
Another said: 'Princetown is a very nurturing and caring environment. Since being here, my child has blossomed into a confident and happy boy.'
A third said: 'I can't praise the staff highly enough.'
Two inspectors spent two days at Princetown last month and their report has just been published.
Lead inspector Denise Morris says pupils make good progress in all areas during their time in the reception class and that continues throughout their school career.
'The school's good provision is successful in helping the majority make good and, in some cases, outstanding progress,' says Ms Morris.
'Positive attitudes are evident in all classes. Particularly good teaching for older pupils, characterised by strong relationships, exciting activities and practical tasks, results in some accelerated learning.'
Ms Morris praises the school's rich new curriculum. She says this is enriched by a wide range of visits and a high number of after-school clubs. The children's excellent contribution to the local community and the regular residential trip to the Dartmoor Training Centre engages all pupils well and promotes very good awareness of the need to look after their environment.
The school also provides good quality care, guidance and support which ensures pupils feel secure.
'There has been good improvement since the previous inspection and the school has a good capacity to continue improving,' she says.
'Leaders are driving improvement in all areas of the school.
'The head has a clear vision for the future (and) is ably supported by the whole staff team. The governing body is knowledgeable and supportive.'
To continue its improvement, Princetown should raise achievement in writing and improve pupils' awareness of other cultures.
Headteacher Ali Hirst said: 'The staff, children and wider community have really pulled together and I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone as you all played a key part in this achievement for our school and community.
'As judged by Ofsted, Princetown is a good school with some outstanding aspects and we all feel extremely proud of our school and children.
'This achievement has come at a time of recent change for Princetown and is a true reflection of the positive changes happening in the village as a whole.'
