Whitchurch v Cornwood
WHITCHURCH beat Cornwood by 1 run on Saturday in an exciting match where fortunes swung regularly from side to side.
Whitchurch lost the toss and were asked to bat first. Ewen Rae and James Aggiss put on 35 for the first wicket before Rae was run out after a mix-up following a dropped catch. Ian Gray scored a rapid 20 before he was caught on the boundary.
Neil Folley (14) and Andy Alford (13) made useful contributions and
Aggiss played a sheet anchor role, scoring 40 before eventually being caught by Griffiths.
Extras (31) also made a good contribution and the Whitchurch innings closed at 156 for 8 off 40 overs.
With a fast outfield and a short boundary on one side, this always looked to be an attainable total and so it appeared when Cornwood started to bat.
Although opener Andy Rickard was bowled by Tom Ingram for a duck, S Horton (30) and Weaver (20) kept the visitors well up with the required rate.
Horton finally fell to a brilliant diving catch by Rae in the slips and Weaver was caught by Ian Court at mid-on.
Terry Burnside (23) batted well before being run out attempting a second run to retain the strike.
Although wickets began to tumble, the lower order batsmen kept the momentum going and at the start of the final over Cornwood required only 3 runs to win with two wickets to fall.
Tom Ingram then bowled O'Hay with the first ball of the over.
The new batsman L Horton played the second ball to third man — an easy single, but incredibly the batsmen went for a second run, leaving Horton run out by several yards and Whitchurch the winners by one run.
Tom Ingram finished with 4 for 57 and Andy Alford with 3 for 39. Ian Court (1 for 17) was the other successful bowler.
Whitchurch took 19 points.
